How to Make Enchanting Miniature Teddy Bears
Published in Hardcover by Robert Hale Ltd (January, 1998)
Author: Debbie Kesling
Average review score:

Excellent introduction into the Art of minature teddy Bears
This book is well thought out. Its step by step instruction on Minature Teddy Bear making is the best I have come across. The author starts out with simple teddy making projects and ends with the more difficult projects near the end of the book. It flows perfectly. The information that the author gives is very helpfull information that could otherwise be hard to attain. She is open with her hints and tips on the Art of Minature Teddy Bear making. The photographs and instuction are very clear and easy to follow, very well done. I read it and followed all the projects from begining to end. This book has very valuable information in it to help one make and start their own Teddy Bear bussiness. The book is also a wounderfull for the person who wants to just learn how to make these great little Teddy Bears for themselves. I am impressed! I have read and looked at a number of teddy bear making books. I would have to say that this book tops the chart for content, instruction, information and a feeling of warmth and wounder in the enchanting world of Teddy Bears. Buy this book, forget the rest.
I have bought, sight unseen, every book on bear making and miniature bear making that has ever been published. As a result, I've thrown away my money on a lot of mediocre and even crummy books. THIS BOOK, however, is a different story. This book is much better than any others on miniature bear making, particularly for beginners. Debbie Kesling's techniques are the best of anyone's, in my opinion. For example, after I tried her technique for attaching the bear's ears to the head, it made a big difference in my bears' appearance and my ears are sewn on so well that an atomic blast couldn't remove them. Little details like that make the difference between a well-crafted bear and a sloppily-made one. I repeat, there are so many books on miniature bear-making that will really disappoint you, but this book by Debbie Kesling is a keeper. Don't waste your money on the others, except for Linda Mullins' Creating Miniature Teddy Bears which has cute patterns but it is not geared for beginners. (Deb Canham once wrote a great book on miniature bearmaking but it isn't available any more! Boo hoo!) In closing: If I had to pick just one book on miniature bearmaking to recommend, this would be it.

Debbie Kesling book of miniature bears is wonderful!
Explaining the hows and wherefores of making any kind of craft item is difficult at best. Especially when you have to do it totally in print. But Debbie Kesling has succeeded beautifully. Not only is this book well written with clear explanations, the photos are beautiful. Anyone even mildly interested in the art of miniature bearmaking will find this book enlightening and entertaining. I have been making miniature bears myself for 7 years and learned a thing or two from Debbie's wonderful book.

The Animal Family
Published in Hardcover by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (March, 1997)
Authors: Randall Jarrell and Maurice Sendak
Average review score:

My favorite book from childhood
(...) (A Librarian)gave me a copy of The Animal Family as a birthday present one year, and it immediately became my favorite book.

This story is so simply told, yet so beautiful that it has stayed with me all my life (30 years and counting since I first read it). I keep several copies of it so that I can give them away whenever I meet a special child who I think would appreciate it.

You can read the other reviews if you want to know the story line... nothing can do it justice, however, except just reading it. When you start, you won't want the story to end, and when it does, you will be sad that the world - and relationships - aren't really as beautiful as they are in the book.

This is an absolute MUST READ for any child. Or adult.

The Stuff Dreams Are Made of¿
Even as a third grader I was an avid reader in search of great books. By passing the standard issue Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys, I wanted the stuff dreams were made of. I remember discovering The Animal Family and being more intreagued by its presentation (a smallish book with wide margins on each page, crammed amid the large, brightly colored books of the children's library). But the opening page drew me in and kept me entranced for days. I re-read the book whenever I could find it in the school library-until it disappeared. Last night, my five-year-old daughter asked me to tell her a story. I searched the depths of my memory and began the story of a "lonely hunter who lived in a log cabin where the woods meet the beach. One night he heard a mermaid singing..." As my daugter's eyes grew wide while she watched my face, hoping, perhaps, to pull the words all the faster from my memory, I knew I needed to find the book that 30 years ago enthralled me with its uniqueness and then stayed in my memory long enough to promise the same for my daughter.

My favorite book from childhood
The day after I turned eight years old, my family moved into a house next door to the Golden Gate Valley Branch public library in San Francisco. I lived there for the next nine years exactly, moving on my 17th birthday, and spent six days a week in the library next door (except for that brief period when I was banned for having 77 overdue books, and had to work off my fines before they'd let me back in). I'd have been in there seven days a week except they were closed on Sunday, which has ever since been my least favorite day of the week.

There were several children's librarians there during the years I lived next door, and they all took an interest in me as I was such a voracious reader. One gave me a copy of The Animal Family as a birthday present one year, and it immediately became my favorite book.

This story is so simply told, yet so beautiful that it has stayed with me all my life (30 years and counting since I first read it). Before the internet came along, I made it a point to locate used copies through the booksellers' network, and kept several copies on hand so that I could give them away whenever I met a special child who I thought would appreciate it.

My half-brother has three little girls (ages seven, five and three) whom I am going to meet soon for the first time; I'm hoping to be able to read at least the first two chapters to the two older girls, as I just know this will make an excellent first impression!

You can read the other reviews if you want to know the story line... nothing can do it justice, however, except just reading the book. When you start, you won't want the story to end, and when it does, you will be sad that things the world - families and relationships - aren't really as beautiful, simple and loving as they are in the book.

This is an absolute MUST READ for any child. Or adult.

Shooting Bears: The Adventures of a Wildlife Photographer

Capturing text and brillient display......................,
John Pezzenti once again is shareing his world with us in his latest book, Shooting Bears: This beautifully bound album of magnificient photographs truly show cases John`s mastery of the lens and his knowledge of his subjects. The stories John shares with us in Shooting Bears:, both with his pen, and with his camera, are a pricless treasure that will leave you in awe of these wonderful wild animals and in wonder at this artists extreme talent. John takes you along in his travels and shows you

in his photographs just why he goes there. This wonderful display is a must-have for all who enjoy wildlife and bears in particular, and for those who appreciate being right out there with them. Thanks for the wonderful trip John, God Bless.

THE ULTIMATE, BOOK ON BEARS!!!!!!
"SHOOTING BEARS" is a masterpiece of knowledge and highly technical and artistic photography woven into the ultimate book on bears ever published.

If I wasn't laughing about the chapter "Hunt of the Bozo's"; I was crying over one of his other unique encounters. While all of the narritive kept me on the edge of my chair, Coming from Denali Park; I,ve heard it all about bears for years; but no one ever has had the fortitude and talent to create a book of this techinal depth, unique character, and overwhelming magnitude.

While Pezzenti's work in his Alaska and American Eagle books completly blew nature photography to a higher level, Shooting Bears convinced me that this Photojounalist (Pezzenti) is without question in a league of his own and even the top pro's need to study this man's work. But don,t take my word for it, 30 minutes alone with Shooting Bears in your lap will forever embed Pezzenti's work in your heart as well.

Thanks, John. You continue to enlighten and amaze us all with your creations.

Not your everyday.
These photographs are totally amazing. I can't even believe the photographer could get so close to bears so many times, especially considering some of the close calls he describes-hilariously-in the book. John Pezzenti has really captured something wild here, so very beautifully.

This is a fantastic gift for a child who loves animals, cuddly or scary, or for an adult, like me, who just wants a fantastic nature photography book. The animal is beautiful and has never been captured so artistically, so stunningly, before.

The anecdotes, as I mentioned, are good for a laugh and bring out the reality of the photos.

The final word: If you want a book on bears, this is the best one I've seen. If you want great wildlife photography, this is without a doubt going to please and excite you.

A Bear Called Paddington
Published in Paperback by Yearling Books (March, 1989)
Average review score:

Runaway Bear Loose in Paddington Station!
What do you do with a small bear from Darkest Peru who shows up lost and alone in the busiest train station in England? If you take him home, watch out! Because trouble sticks to Paddington like marmalade on toast. Like all good families, the Browns love Paddington no matter how much trouble he gets into. This endearingly silly book is the first of many hilarious Paddington adventures

A wonderful read!
"A Bear..." is one of the few books that really fascinated me. I usually buy children's books to give to my little cousins and I must say I enjoyed reading Paddington as much as they have. I decided to buy two copies: one for myself and one for my cousins. This is one children's book that will be appreciated by adults as well. The characters are quite real and easily identified with. I believe the selling point of the book is the innocence of Paddington himself. Michael Bond manages to bring out the innocent kid in us as we read of Paddington's adventures.

So there is not only Pooh Bear!
My daughter read this book for school and truly enjoyed it. Although only 8 and there were some challenging words and concepts, she was enamored with Paddington and all his silly antics. Now the stuffed animal has better meaning for all of us at home.

The House at Pooh Corner
Published in Unknown Binding by ()
Author: A. A. Milne
Average review score:

What richness, what grandeur is so easily captured? :)
This classic is listed under the age group of four to eight, and as a Poohphile I am quite appalled that it is. Winnie the Pooh books have such wit, wisdom, and humor that gets better every time I read them. Their not just for children, they are for everyone. Over the years, Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger, Kanga, and Roo have become some of my dearest chums. I once heard someone say, or perhaps I read it, that "books are like dear friends, and who has too many friends?" I am quite inclined to agree with that statement. This book is a dear friend of mine and I hope that you shall make it yours. :)

The Pooh Review by Rafael Velasquez
The house at Pooh Corner is a really good book everyone should read it .I read it for a class project I thuoght it would be a baby book but it wasn't. It was really funny, and it had strange words.I didn't know that pooh liked condesed milk, or that tigger lived with kanga and roo. I wish A.A.Milne had written more books about pooh the books he wrote about pooh were really funny. I wonder what would have happened if A.A.M. had written more pooh books maybe even a pooh movie. The books were really funny and I love how A.A.M. writes. Pooh makes the best poems i've heard. My personal favorite character is Tigger his attitude is kind of like mine. I woud reccomend this book a lot because it's really funny and the way A.A.M. gives live to the characters is really cool nothing like the disney one wich is almost boring

Smile All Ye Who Enter Here
Attention: all cranky four year olds, five year olds, eight year olds and thirty-five year olds on long car trips.

Attention all parents burned out by reading The Pokey Little Puppy over and over again.

Attention cynics whose primary memory of Winnie-the-Pooh is the Dorothy Parker quote (from her "Constant Reader" column in the New Yorker) "Tontant Weader frowed-up".

This book is a treasure for all who hear it. There is gentleness and not a little wit in these stories. Contray to the book description above, the book is read by the late Charles Kuralt. His inflection adds much to the story. One senses that he is amused; but he is never condesending. Now I will always prefer Kuralt's version to my own bedtime efforts with my children. Charles Kuralt must have loved Winne-the-Pooh mightily. How lucky we are that he left this delightful gift behind.

Mr. Bear Squash-You-All-Flat

Authors: Morrell Gipson, Gary Larson, and Angela

Like having an old friend visit!
This story was one of my all-time favorites as a child 45 years ago. I loved seeing the little guys outwit the over-powering Mr. Bear. I have my original copy (though it's dog-earred) but was so happy to be able to buy a new one to share with my grandchildren. Also, a friend and I had been searching antique stores, resale shops, and Goodwill stores for years for a copy for her, since it was a favorite of hers long ago, too. I am so pleased to have a copy to send to her for Christmas now - I wish I could be there to see the look on her face when she opens it!

My Heart Danced With Joy !
Of all the books I read to my children so long ago, I never forgot this book. I loved reading it and seeing the fun my children had as I read it. That grouchy old bear is a reminder that even though we may not always feel happy, we can't take it out on others. The story was told in such a gentle way, that, even as we closed the book, we could still smile about Mr. Bear. I was so happy to find that the book had been reprinted. I ordered two copies, and when they arrived in the mail today, I was overjoyed. As I opened the box, I felt as though I was seeing an old friend after many, many years. Thank you Amazon for making it so easy to order, and to receive it in such a short time. This was my first time to buy something on the internet, but now, I have plans to order this book for all my children and their children! Holding this book in my hands, is like holding a cherished memory.

Finally! - Mr. Bear Squash-You-All-Flat is back!
My brother and I have been searching for this book for 25 years. I began to think we had imagined the book until I heard Gary Larson talk about it in an interview. Like Mr. Larson, my brother loved to have it read over and over. (I did finally find an original one on the internet for $800!) The new book is as great as we remembered and was my favorite Christmas surprise. Thanks Amazon for making it available and easy to get.

Peef: The Christmas Bear
Published in Hardcover by Waldman House Press (June, 2003)
Authors: Tom Hegg and Warren Hanson
Average review score:

A story to last for generations to come.
This book is cute. Adorable, if you will. I am a 15-year-old boy who just used the words "cute" and "adorable". That's right. I have strayed from the stereotype of a teenager being "too cool" to think anything's cute. Tom Hegg's tale found a way into my heart. Right from the beginning, you can tell the story's going to be good. With the ryhming lines, colorful illustrations, and warm mood, you can't help but read on. In a nutshell, Santa calls upon his elves to aquire different fabrics, with which Santa makes an adorable (there's that word again!) teddy bear. Peef, the Christmas Bear loved dooing oddjobs around the workshop for the Big Guy, but being among these toys made him long for a child to hold him. Watch your entire family's faces light up as you read this beautiful story to them during December (or even Christmas Eve!). This book has the special kind of magic which makes it last through the generations, so that your grandchildren's grandchildren will feel the same joy that you felt when you read it for the first time. Don't miss out on this masterpiece.

Starting a tradition
I bought this book for my son because of the other good reviews that it received here on Amazon. I'm very glad that I did. It is a delightful story and I hope that it will become a tradition to read this to him many, many times before Christmas Eve. As a bonus, I purchased Peef the 9" Bear also, for Santa to put under the tree. I thought after hearing the story so much, my son would be happy to see that sweet bear under his tree. Maybe the bear and book will be handed down to his children? Sounds like a sweet idea to me.

My Daughter's year with Peef.

Last year, at Thanksgiving, my daughter found a small multi-colored bear and a book. Although other similar purchases were soon cast aside, Peef has remained her fast friend for an entire year! This Thanksgiving, all her other stuffed animals got their own table and gave a birthday party for the bear loved for so much of a child's lifetime.

Perhaps this explains why the book has such a hold on us. It is one of the few children's books that still brings a mist to the eyes when read. The style , tone, and pace of the book are all excellent. My one wish? I do wish the publisher would produce a version where the child to whom Peef goes is a girl rather than a boy. I read it to my daughter and her friends that way sometimes...

As in the story, this Peef has made a child very happy. I like to think that he is too.

Bear Attacks
Published in Paperback by McClelland & Stewart (July, 1999)
Author: Stephen Herrero
Average review score:

As expert as anyone can be on this subject.
Stephen Herrero's "Bear Attacks : Their Causes and Avoidance" is a good, serious, informative, bear attack read. The presentation is more scientific than literary and the book could have been written in a more captivating style, however. It's hard to imagine a book dedicated to true to life bear attacks that wouldn't keep outdoorsmen up at night, flipping page after page, but this is that book. If you'd like to combine true bear attack stories with a more masterful literary style, try Scott McMillion's "Mark of the Grizzly".

Those who go on to read more by Herrero about bear attacks (legal documents, etc.) will find that he ultimately admits that this is far from an exact science too. In his testimony as expert witness in the Mt. Lemon (Arizona) attack, Herrero contradicts some of the most fundamental premises found in this book.

Read this book, by all means, but before entering bear country, keep in mind that sometimes bears will do the unexpected. After all, what's the difference between black bear poop and grizzly bear poop? Griz poop has bells in it and smells like pepper.

Easy to read and informative
As a novice who hopes to backpack through bear country someday, I found this book to be a good introduction to bears and their habits. The author writes with reverence and respect about these magnificent animals, but he includes common-sense information which could very well be a lifesaver someday. The photos were helpful as well, and the book proved to be a quick read, interesting and useful.

informative scientific review
This is a great book. I love to hike in bear country and feel much more prepared now that I have read it. Herrero presents his data in both a scientific and honest way careful not to overstate what we do or don't know about bears. He is clearly the world's authority on bear behavior as he has been on site after nearly every bear attack in north america in the past 30 years. He describes in detail (often gorry but necessarily so) what happened in each account and provides a critique of what the injured did or did not do correctly in the given situation. Clearly anyone who reads this book will be better prepared to enter bear country with both respect for bears and how to avoid confrontation. I highly recommend this book.

Summer With the Bears: Six Seasons in the North Woods
Published in Paperback by Hyperion (Adult Trd Pap) (June, 2000)
Authors: Jack Becklund and Patti Becklund
Average review score:

Best book I ever read!!!!
Summer with the bears is by far the best book I've ever read. If you don't have it or haven't read it do so now. It will change your life in some way I'm sure. I first read about it in the Reader's Digest and put my copy on order for the moment it came out. Little bit and all of the other bears touched my heart so much it's hard ot describe. I felt like I was there with them as events were happening. Jack and Patti you are so lucky to have had this special time in your lives and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your sharing it with us. Just goes to show that all animals are not as we always imagine them to be, yet we know at the same time they are not all created equal. There are those that possess a special trait and willingness to be different, that was little bit. Your book was written from your heart, and the pictures helped us to be there too. I laughed and I cried along with you. so few of us will experience what you did interacting with the bears on the level that you did. I attribute your book to helping me find a hidden talent I did not know existed in me. I started sketching, and yes mostly bears. I did one of you and Patti with little bit, if you'd ever like them all you need to do is ask and they are yours. You touched my life in such a special way that in turn I'd like to touch your lives too. Hope there will be more books and I wish you all the best in your lives. Thank You for sharing your special lives with the world.

ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL & BEARY HEARTWARMING!!
I just loved this book. Hated to come to the end. A marvelous and touching story about animals, love and trust and nature. Almost too amazing to be true but with wonderful photos to prove it! I will lie awake at night and dream of Jack and Patti and their bears. Thank you, Becklunds!

Magical!
If you love animals, nature, the great outdoors, and reading about people who love all those things too, please get this book, sit down with a box of tissues, and enjoy! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll shake your head in wonderment. The author Jack Becklund and his wife Patti, move deep into the Minnesota forests. Their property is home to deer gamboling on the lawn, chipmunks and hand-fed squirrels munching seeds on the porch, wild mallard ducks swimming and splashing in the creek below, and a colorful array of native birds. But the real heart of the story is Little Bit, the black bear cub who toddles onto the back deck one day, and stays for the next six summers as a welcome, loving, and deeply loved guest of the couple. She is a magical spirit, a living, breathing gift from God, sent to bring great joy to their lives. We are honored to meet Little Bit's cubs, her mates, and numerous other black bears who live in the area, and come to trust the Becklunds. The story itself is incredible, but between the lines, we watch the couple come to love and appreciate the power of this sacred trust they've been given...the joy of the relationship they share with these magnificent animals. This is a book for all time...a classic in every sense of the word. The photos are magnificent, and bring the personalities of the animals into beautiful focus.

Words Their Way, Third Edition
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (07 May, 2003)
Authors: Donald R. Bear, Marcia Invernizzi, and Francine Johnston
Average review score:

Words Their Way Curriculum Also Effective for Older Students
I acquired this book on the recommendation of one of my professors. I had heard great things about the program's effectiveness with younger readers, but was not convinced I could adapt it to suit the needs of older students with reading difficulties. However, because my students dislike worksheets as much as I do, I am constantly searching for hands-on activities that developed word attack and spelling skills. Donald Bear et al provided me with numerous games and word sorts to use with my reading classes. It has also been possible to extend the curriculum to a higher level by creating additional word sorts that focus on the specific issue of high school readers/spellers. In my opinion, this book is an essential resource for every elementary teacher, language arts teacher, reading specialist, or tutor.

Reviews from Language Arts & CA Reader:
Here are two recent reviews of Words Their Way:

This book is a must read for teachers who are interested in not only improving spelling and vocabulary, but in improving the competency of their students as readers and writers. (Thompson, S. (1998). "Professional Bookshelf," The California Reader, 31 (3), pp. 33-34.)

We suggest that Words Their Way be kept on a convenient shelf for daily reference in every teacher's classroom for easy access and use." (Shanahan, S., Macphee, J., McMillen, L., Lynch, M., Hester, J., Brodzik, K., (1997). "Materials that make the mark: Explicit skills instruction." Language Arts, 74, pp. 291-292.)

Excellent Word Study Resource
This book was assigned as part of my Master's in Reading program. It is well-written and easy to use. Ideas are plentiful. Sections include material which may be photocopied and used in the classroom or clinic setting. It helps inform teacher instruction and provides an excellent resource that honors the synchrony of reading, writing, listening and spelling. I use it and have seen results!
